CBS’MUN Report 2023

It is a great pleasure to bring a report of the second edition of CBS’MUN 2023. Col. Brown School Model United Nations October 2023 which witnessed two days of rigorous and heated debates which pulled the audience to the edges of their seats.

To continue the legacy the second edition of CBS’MUN’2023 was organized from 20th to 21st October 2023. The students of classes VIII to XII participated in the four different committees as delegates of:

1. UNSC – China-Taiwan Strait crisis
2. UNESCO – selecting the new Seven Wonders of the World
3. WHO – social media and mental health
4. UNODC – links between drug trafficking and terrorist funding

Each committee consisted of approximately twelve delegates, a General Secretary, Chairs and vice-chairs who underwent forty-five days of preparations, researches, discussions late evenings and run through on the 19th October 2023.

Finally on 20th of October 2023 CBS’MUN 2023, the zealous session began with the opening ceremony encompassing antiwar poems, songs and a skit showcased fervently by Brownian’s. It was followed by the General Secretary’s declaration of CBS’MUN 2023 open.

The first committee session started at 9:00 am with UNSC committee chair/vice-chair opening GSL to discuss their topic China-Taiwan crisis.

The topic of UNSC committee led the rise in temperature of the conference hall right from the beginning of GSL itself it led to the heated arguments amongst the delegates of USA, Taiwan, China, and Russia.

This was followed by Malta taking over Taiwan in support of China and advocating the reason for why China wanted to take over Taiwan explaining advantages Taiwan will have after China takes over.

These unstoppable arguments continued till break for high tea at 11:30 am. Delegate of Taiwan argued his case very strongly rejecting all arguments put in favour of China. The delegate of Taiwan stood alone denying all.

Finally, motion to discuss the resolution was passed and committee moved to resolution. UNSC committee came to an end with China negotiating with Taiwan a deal of 50% share in the economic growth for letting China take over Taiwan for 50 years initially.

The second committee session resumed after lunch. UNESCO committee session started with very interesting topic i.e., selecting the new Seven Wonders of the World. Each country argued their case to table the historical monuments of their country and their choice. It led to different motions raised for discussions.

At last, after long sessions UNESCO committee session ended with the resolutions to accept the plea of fellow delegates and make necessary amendments to cater the need of changing scenario.

On 21st October the second day session started at 9:00 am with WHO committee which was set up to discuss their topic “” social media and mental health” rigorous discussion, arguments took place with each country giving their data of the harmful effects of social media on the mental health of thesociety.

The delegates urged the member countries to form united front to combat the harmful effects of social media upon young generation. WHO committee successfully discussed various issues such as Dark Web, Cyber Bullying etc. It was certainly a very fruitful session for WHO committee delegates. It also educated the audience regarding the harmful tools of social media which has caused havoc in the past.

The WHO committee session ended with the resolution passed by the member states to make strict laws so that there is no misuse of social media.

The next committee which was set up in the United Nations was UNODC with the topic drug trafficking and terrorist funding.

The Chair led the discussion to open speeches in GSL which out flowed the charges levied on each other disclosing the data of the member states who are supporting drug trafficking with flexible laws which permits the non-state actors and other outlaws involved in supplying drugs to the younger generation.

This committee session came to an end with the resolution passed by the UNODC committee urging member states to make laws which will put restriction upon drug trafficking and putting check on terrorist funding.

Every committee displayed different motions such as GSL, Moderate and Unmoderated Caucus followed by 1vs.1 debate and 2vs.2 debates.

Col. Brown School was totally engrossed in the atmosphere of United Nations for two days. Everywhere everyone be it delegates, teachers, students’ non-participants were seen discussing and talking on topics of
MUN and putting forward their views for and against the topic.

CBS’MUN 2023 came to an end with the closing ceremony late in the evening with the speech of the convener and flashback videos presentation and the speech of The Headmaster urging some of the delegates to take up civil services or foreign services as their career. At last, the General Secretary declared the CBS’MUN 2023 close.

Nimish Sharma was chosen as the overall best speaker from UNSC committee, and the UNSC was also chosen as the best committee for CBS’MUN 2023.

It was followed by the best delegates award to one delegate from each committee. Abhinav Vaibhav, Jaskaran Surana were the delegates who made a mark in their respective committees by taking part active part in the committee sessions.

Abhinav Vaibhav won the best delegate award in UNSC committee. The Certificates for The Participation, The Best Committee, Best Delegate and overall Best Speaker were given out by The Headmaster in a
ceremony.

CBS’MUN 2023 was very informative and totally new experience for the Brownian’s. It gave them a platform to discover their abilities and learn to make best use of them.
